In July we got a new dog. We had been thinking about it and I had been looking around online and at the shelter. We went off on a Saturday and made the rounds to the adoptions fairs at various pet stores. We had specific desires...I needed a small dog so I would be able to lift hi/her and manage a walk. Lauren is allergic so we wanting a no/low shedding dog. We also wanting a young dog but not a brand new puppy. We saw nothing close at any of the fairs and so went to the Humane Society. We saw a very cute schnauzer puppy ( 4mos) and went to put a hold on him but someone had beaten us to the punch. That was a bit disappointing. We started looking again and saw a small scruffy terrier with a cone around his neck. He looked to be the right size and type so they brought him out to visit with us. He was pretty timid and with that cone on kind of hard to really assess. He also had a bad case of kennel cough and had phlegm all over his beard. We hemmed and hawed and decided to take a gamble on him. We found out he had been neutered...thus the cone. They gave us some antibiotics and we were off. We took off the cone as it was the last day he needed it. I ran over the Wal-mart next door to grab some necessities and then we opened the car door and he jumped right in.
It took him a few days to start eating and sleeping but in no time he had gotten used to us. We are just now beginning obedience for him. He knew nothing. We didn't have to potty train him...he seemed to know just what to do and now has a dog door so just takes care of things. He has a few issues but is overall a great dog. I say that he is half-cat because he jumps like one and likes to perch and be on high narrow places.
He is crate trained and happily goes into his crate at night to sleep. We leave loose when we are out and as long as he has a blanket to sleep on and a window to look out he is happy.
He is obsessed with rabbits and he loves to tunnel under the covers and otherwise be completely under a blanket. That rodent hunting gene seems to be strong in him. He did escape last week and get to chase a bunny all the way down the street. I think it was the highlight of his life so far.
